Women in the pool
Ex-Hacienda San Antonio

I just came back from Oaxaca, a city located in central Mexico. This city is known for its cultural richness and gastronomical treasures. I’m glad I saw the richness of this city myself. Many people said, “Oaxaca is the cultural heart of Mexico”. and I have to agree with them because I was seduced by this city; it left love marks on my cultural heart. I wanted to stay and never leave. One of the things, I was fascinated by was their hotel architectures. There are hotels with different budgets and architectural designs for all types of guests. I spent a week in Oaxaca and I stood at four lodgings. Below are the four hotels I stood at and along with reviews based on my personal experience.

Hotel Con Corazon

Budget: Under $100 usd

Location: División Oriente 129, Santa María del Marquesado, Centro, 68030 Oaxaca de Juárez, Oax., Mexico

A mid-budget hotel with a heart of gold. This community-based hotel is at the end of Division Oriente. The hotel layout is a mid-century design. The interior looks like an indoor treehouse. The inside offers different sectional areas to relax, meditate, read a book, or watch the kitchen culinary dance. One of the things, I enjoy about this establishment is the owners’ love for the community and their interest to improve their social conditions. I considered this hotel the beautiful indoor treehouse with a big heart.

Los Amantes

Budget: $100 usd and up

Location: Calle de Ignacio Allende 108, RUTA INDEPENDENCIA, Centro, 68000 Oaxaca de Juárez, Oax., Mexico

This hotel is aesthetically appealing and centrally located, but it lacks one thing, the local warmth. I stood at this hotel for one night to check out the scene and also, I wanted to be close to the Templo Santo Domingo for early-morning sunrise photography. I think this hotel holds a big plus for the location, but the obnoxious vibes can’t be ignored. My check-in wasn’t pleasant because after parking the car; I decided to quickly tour the area, upon my return, they informed me the front plate of the vehicle was removed by a traffic agent. The hotel was asking me to recover the plate on my own and pay the violation fee. I firmly told them, no! it wasn’t my fault. I told them, I left the key with the doorman. Luckily, one of the hotel staff solved the situation by recovering the plate and paying the violation. The incident taught me about their environment and business structure.  If you are looking for a great location and amazing views, this is your place, but you’ve been warned about their ambiance.

Hallway in the hacienda
Ex-Hacienda San Antonio

Ex-hacienda San Antonio

Budget: $100 +

Location: San Sebastián Teitipac, Oaxaca, Mexico

Tucked in the beautiful Sierra of San Sebastian is this 302 years old rustic colonial hacienda. When I arrived at this Eden, I felt I was playing a part in a Spanish telenovela. Wow! This place is a dream, an ecological dream indeed!  From the welcoming staff to the most delicious breakfast, this place steals the show; I didn’t want to leave. As I roamed the empirical hallway, I thought about different reasons why this palace should be my second home. I need to write a whole blog post about it in order to describe in details the view, experience, layout, and morning detox. You have to come and experience the countryside magic.

Oaxaca City Centro

Budget: $100+

Location: Aldama 410, Barrio de Jalatlaco, 68080 Oaxaca de Juárez, Oax., Mexico

A beautifully designed hotel in a hip location called, Jalatlaco. Both interior and exterior are painted in pink. The hotel is walking distance from the city center. The hotel has valet parking, elevator, and comfortable rooms. The concept is an integration of Mexican decor and minimalistic touch. Also, they have a beautiful, Terraza

Oaxaca is home to many accommodations with different budgets, plus Airbnb options. You just have to keep the basics in mind: location, budget, cleanliness, free wi-fi, complimentary breakfast, and security. After considering these factors, everything else is accessorial. I’ve been loyal to American Express travel and Expedia for booking my accommodations. Both companies give points to redeem for your dream stay.
