Why Wearelatams?

My name is Fredelinda and I help Latin Americans solidify the presence, strengthen the voice, and increase the representation of the Latam community online. I help Latin Americans find their power in their roots and use this power to shape their identity and improve our global presence.

Perhaps you have never considered traveling to Latin America, even though you know you have roots there. Arranging travel, knowing where to go, what to see – it’s all too much to organize by yourself, and you don’t really feel a need to go.

You don’t feel compelled to find out more about what happened in the past, and you don’t have a need to connect with your family history. You’re certainly not alone in feeling this way.

My name is Fredelinda, and I help Latin Americans solidify the presence, strengthen the voice, and increase the representation of the Latam community online. I’m just a regular person who enjoys writing, photography and spending time with my furry love, but I know that there is power in your roots and you can use this to shape your identity.

Around the world, many young people with Latin American heritage are being raised as natives to their countries, and that’s perfectly normal. If you grew up in America, you probably consider yourself to be an American. But deep in your heart, you know there’s something more – an entire culture sits waiting for you, a culture that has influenced and guided your family for hundreds of years.

I’ve traveled to 6 continents, and every time I have landed at JFK airport, I have exited the airport in search of rice and beans. I love the beaches in Italy, I find the Eiffel Tower to be magical, and the food in Bali is delicious – but it isn’t the cultural heart of my roots.

I needed to travel the world to understand the value and power of my roots. It took 60 countries for me to realize that we are not superior or inferior to any other nation, but instead, we have our own unique treasures that are worth sharing with the world.

If your family has been away from Latin America for more than one or two generations, your identity may not even include terms such as “Latino” or “Hispanic”. This really hit me when I lost my brother in the Iraq war. An active army member, he was just 22 years old when he was killed by a bombing incident in Baquba, Iraq.

This was a devastating and heartbreaking loss for me and my family. During this time, I realized that due to a lack of identity within the Latin American community, young Latams were creating their own identities by joining the army, gangs, and toxic groups. I believe my brother was seeking to belong to something bigger to feel validation in his life.

To counteract this, I created an online platform to help Latinas embrace their culture by providing informative cultural content and experiences. This grew into a community of 24,000 members, and I hosted local events to connect with the community and hear their stories. It didn’t take long for me to realize that I needed to help all Latams to explore the power of their roots. I changed the platform brand from Wearelatinas to Wearelatams to emphasize this inclusivity.

If you’ve ever felt lost, without an identity, or are just unsure of who you really are, you need to join us. We’ll improve the global presence of Latin Americans and we’ll help you harness the power of your roots to become all that you were meant to be.
