Oaxaca, Mexico

Before my arrival, miles away in New York City, I kept imagining the menu choices in Oaxaca: What do they eat? What are the traditional plates? Which condiments do they use? Can I really eat all seven moles? I bombarded my mind with all these questions because I’m a foodie at heart. Every time I travel, I want to know, where do locals eat?   I seek for authentic experiences so local suggestions are  prerequisites. All of these questions are based on two reasons: One is because the culture is clearly expressed through their gastronomy and two after a trip, I come back home and recreate the dishes with an additional add-on, my own style. When I arrived in Oaxaca, I was on a culinary mission in finding where are the best places to eat in Oaxaca? I think you are going to starve by the end of this post, unless you book a flight to Oaxaca, or join us on an upcoming tour. But let’s slow down or at least before you go, know where to nest those cravings.

Oaxaca

Oaxaca is located in Mexico, specifically, southwestern Mexico and the capital city is called, Oaxaca de Juarez. Before my arrival, I raped my mind with the above questions-a foodie crime. After I landed and savored a few plates, here it comes, Oaxaca is the food pillar of ancestral flavors. From hand-pressed tortillas to grounded spices on soil made mortar reflect

the cultural heart of Oaxaca. The flavors’ origins are based on old kept traditions. Their pride is slipped through their preparations and presentation presented on their menu. I believe is a well-deserved pride because their food is really that good! I want to share with you the places in which these traditions come to life once the plates landed and the steam creeped inside my nostrils. I want to add something else, I personally roamed, ate, and exchanged words with the locals at these places so I can authentically reveal to you the hidden flavors of Oaxaca. But let’s stay focus once again with the mission, where are the BEST PLACES to Eat in Oaxaca? Crave on!

Mexican quote

The food markets in Oaxaca are like a food themed park. As soon as I placed my first step, I smelled the flavors; old and Modern flavors. These markets are the pivotal points of oaxaqueño cuisine. A place where old kept tradition are still cooking

. Here are my favorite food markets in Oaxaca:

Omg God! This market is heaven. Fresh made Tlayludas, Quesillos, and Moles. These items can rob your anger and leave you with joy! The smoked flavors are the ignited incense roaming the aisles. Fresh bread is a prerequisite and cacao bars are your take home tickets. Whatever your food craving is, guess what? You can find it here.

Fresh made traditional products are the trademark at this food abode. The sweetness of the fresh fruits is detected miles away.  The added-bonus is the friendliness of the people. They fight for you to take home in your belly their own unique flavors and the trauma of coming back for more. Come and see the authenticity buried inside their homemade items.

Wow! The interior decor is speechless; it leaves you wondering, is this really Mexico? The wood wall panels and handcrafted  Mexican floor tiles just set the right tone for this ambiance.  But wait! The handcrafted mezcal cocktails are an alcoholic worse nightmare, why? You won’t abuse the alcohol but instead, savor each ingredient respectfully. The cocktail craftsmanship obligates you to respect the labor behind the mezcal preparation. The food is delicious and unique. I believe this place represents the modern side of Mexican culture. I recommend you camp out at this place and try all their amazing items.

I believe I went to a theatrical food act. Why? A local man on the west side corner of the restaurant insisted this restaurant will blow my senses away, and told me, “You are going to enjoy it and taste the rich Mixteco flavors”. I must admit, the presentation at this eatery, it’s superb. My waiter, an older Oaxaqueno, took me to the side and carefully explained to me the different Mixtec sauces by doing a salsa making presentation with me. It was mind-blowing, why? Because he did with such dedication and pride to honor his beloved culture. Their cuisine is based on Mixtec traditions, with a light modern touch. More info
