Picture yourself being served mole negro in a locally made ceramic while sitting on a well-crafted wooden chair which directly on a hand-woven rug while salivating the spicy meal abound. Well, you can get this feeling nowhere else than in Oaxaca, Mexico. After coming first on the list of the world’s 12 leading cultural experiences, you would wonder what this Culturally diverse and prosperous city has to offer.

 

The name Oaxaca comes from the Nahuatl word “Huaxyacac,” which refers to a tree pod called a “Guaje”(Leucaena Leucocephala) found around the capital city

The capital state mesmerizes its visitors with its varieties of sensational cuisine, rich tradition of crafts that are hand-woven and amazing archaeological sites. Not forgetting the Oaxaca city’s contemporary art museum, MACO, an old stylish yet intriguing colonial building showcasing Mexican art.

Cultural seekers will find of interest that the Oaxaca has produced quite a number of notable painters such as Rufino Tamayo, Rodolfo Nieto, Rodolfo Morales, and Francisco Toledo. The movement of arts started by these artist has spurred exhibitions, galleries, museums, and schools such as the Museo de Arte Contemporaneo and Instituto de Artes Graficas de Oaxaca(IAGO).

Los Diablos, La Tortuga, Las Mascaritas and Los Tejorones are some of the best-known dances, and I’m sure you’d want to try one out. La Sandunga is a song that typifies the musical style of the Tehuantepec region and a musical style called “son bioxho” an endemic form of the son style played with drums, an empty tortoise shell, and a reed flute is bound to have you jumping and dancing in excitement.

Quick Fact: Oaxaca is surrounded
by mountains ranging from a very high 8,200 feet(2,500 meters) and a not so low 3,000 feet (915 meters) above sea level.

Known as the “land of the seven moles” with its complex and rich sauces for which its cuisine is popular, the city fires up its visitors taste bud while still offering more of its beauty. The Mole Negro is a “typical” savory-sweet mole, an intricate recipe with a lot of ingredients and steps, all which leads to the sweet pleasure derived from the dish.

Quick Fact: The weather in Oaxaca is comfortable all year round with a typical temperature which varies from 47 F to 87 F and is rarely below 42 F or above 93 F.

El Tule, Teotitlan Village & Mitla Ruins are tours, worthy of embarking. A tour to Hierve el Agua, Mitla and Mezcal factory with their waterfalls and natural pools are expected to relieve you after a long tour of the Monte Alban Zapotec Ruins.
